Add to album

This is the back of a one pound banknote issued by the British Linen Bank on 18 July 1917. The note was printed using steel plates engraved by Waterlow & Sons, London Wall, London.

The back features the bank emblem figure of Pallas, also known as the Greek goddess Athena. It was designed by M Meredith Williams.

By the end of the 1770s the British Linen Company had withdrawn from manufacturing and trading in linen. By the end of the 18th century it was as important as the other two Chartered Banks - the Bank of Scotland and Royal Bank of Scotland.
