Banknote (back), One pound, issued by Commercial Bank of Scotland

This is the back of a one pound banknote issued by the Commercial Bank of Scotland on 1 October 1849. The note was printed using steel plates engraved by W H Lizars of Edinburgh.

The back has an elaborate engraving surrounding the black and red printed revenue stamp.

Established in 1810, the Commercial Bank of Scotland became one of the largest banks in Scotland and was renowned for producing notes of great artistic merit. It eventually became part of the Royal Bank group.
