Letter, written by James Edgar, secretary to James VIII, Old Pretender

This is the second page of a letter written in 1749 to Charles Stewart by James Edgar, secretary to James VIII, 'The Old Pretender'.

Written in Rome, on 28 January 1749, the letter is in reply to a request for financial assistance. It is signed, 'Your most obedient and most humble servant James Edgar'.

After the death of James VII in 1701, his son led the Jacobite Cause. Known as James VIII to the Jacobites, he was the 'Old Pretender' to his enemies. After the Union he tried to take advantage of the government's unpopularity in Scotland.
