This is the two of hearts, one of a pack of 53 playing cards engraved in 1691 by Walter Scott, an Edinburgh goldsmith. The cards show the royal arms and arms of the Scottish nobility who sat in Parliament.

The arms of the Scottish Lords Napier, Fairfax, Richardson and Macky are depicted on the card.

The first trend in non-standard cardmaking occurred in Germany in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Cards from this period are often intricate and very beautiful.
