Back of the 'Four Peers' ring

This is the back of a gold and enamel ring known as the 'Four Peers' ring. The ring commemorates the four Jacobite lords - Kilmarnock, Derwentwater, Balmerino and Lovat - who were executed in 1746 and 1747 for their part in the Jacobite rising of 1745.

The shank of the ring is two entwined ropes with enamelled inscription 'FT AB TD TS DM JD ...30 July 1746' and 'JN...'.

After Culloden, Charles escaped to France and then to Rome. Many of his followers were captured and some executed. Others were forced into exile and had their lands forfeited.
