Silver tea set made in Glasgow, 1873-74
Add to album

The teapot, sugar basin and milk jug in this four-piece silver tea set were made in 1873-4 by J. Reid, a silversmith in Glasgow. The hot water jug was a later addition in 1897-8 by another Glasgow silversmith, W. W. Logan.

Each piece in the tea set has 12 rectangular panels depicting the signs of the Zodiac. The sugar basin is gilded inside.

Domestic silverware was a mark of taste and indicated status. In the 19th century, customers who visited the silver department of any large department store or who patronized fashionable silversmiths found an increasing range of decorative styles.
