Loving cup depicting Robert Burns

A loving cup is a large drinking cup with two handles. This earthenware example commemorates Robert Burns. It was made around 1900 by the Clyde Pottery Company Ltd at Greenock. The company was originally established in 1816.

The side of the cup bears a portrait of Burns.

The Clyde basin, like the Forth, was a natural location for the pottery industry, with a ready supply of coal, a growing market and good transport links.
