This is the obverse of a bronze medal commemorating the building of St James's Square in Edinburgh. The medal is dated 1779 and mentions Thomas Hill who was an architect involved in the building of St James's Square.

The obverse is engraved 'Georgius III Rex Ang. - AE.'

The land used for St James's Square was originally owned by William Ferguson, an Edinburgh lawyer, who commissioned the square to be laid out in 1773. The square was named after Ferguson's brother James.
