Silver medal (reverse) of Arabella Stewart

This is the reverse of a silver medal of Arabella Stewart. It dates from around 1615. Arabella Stewart was the cousin of James VI (I of England) and the medal was issued during her years in prison.

The reverse is inscribed, 'Quho can compare with me in greif I die and dar not seik relief'.

James VI's reign was not without trouble. He was criticised for advancing favourites in a corrupt court. His insecurity was revealed in his treatment of his cousin, Arabella Stewart, whom he imprisoned for marrying another claimant to the throne.
