Gauntlet, from the 17th century

This doeskin gauntlet (pictured her with palm facing downwards) is lined with cloth and overlapping plates of iron. It dates from the 17th century.

Gauntlet of doeskin, lined with cloth and plated with iron, 17th century

The glove is constructed in the same way as a 'jack' - a defensive jacket popular at this time, which may have been invented in Scotland.
