Powder horn, from the north east of Scotland
Add to album

This powder horn was probably made in the north-east of Scotland. It dates from 1669.

This side of the horn is ornamented with geometrical patterns.

Powder horns were fashioned from cow's horns softened in boiling oil and flattened before being carved. They were plugged at the wider end, and the stopper at the narrow end was often used to measure the correct quantity of gunpowder.
