One of the 'Beaton Panels'

This carved wooden panel is one of eight panels known as the 'Beaton Panels'. Made for Cardinal David Beaton, probably in the 1530s, they are an outstanding example of late Gothic woodwork. The carver is not known but was clearly highly skilled.

The panel depicts the Tree of Jessie, copied from a French-printed Book of Hours of the 1520s or 1530s by Thielman Kerver or his widow Yolande Bonhomme of Paris.

When the panels were removed from St Andrews Castle by John Beaton and installed in the dining room of Balfour House in Fife, seven were placed around the upper part of the walls. The eighth panel features bosses which were originally fixed to the ceiling.
