One of the 'Beaton Panels'
Add to album

This carved wooden panel is one of eight panels known as the 'Beaton Panels'. Made for Cardinal David Beaton, probably in the 1530s, they are an outstanding example of late Gothic woodwork. The carver is not known but was clearly highly skilled.

This floral panel, inspired by plants, is typical of the late Gothic style.

The panels may have been made for the cardinal's private apartments in St Andrews Castle and later removed by John Beaton of Balfour, captain of the castle. They were installed in the dining room of Balfour House in Fife.
