Half of mould for communion tokens

This is one half of a brass mould for casting communion tokens. It is from Bankfoot Relief Church in Perthshire and dates from 1832.

This half of the mould is engraved with the words: 'This do in remembrance of me'. These are key words in the communion service, and are taken from the Biblical story of the Last Supper.

In the 18th century many congregations broke away from the established church on points of principle, mainly concerning choice and appointment of ministers. One of the earliest succession groupings was the Relief Church, founded in 1761.
