Clasp

This clasp was among a large number of brass objects and fragments found at Crossraguel Abbey near Maybole in Ayrshire. It dates from the 15th or 16th century. The clasp would have been attached to a pair of book mountings to hold the book shut.

Seventy-nine fragments and objects of brass, including book mountings and pieces of wire, from Crosraguel Abbey

Crossraguel Abbey was founded in the early 13th century as a house of Cluniae monks. Most of the original buildings were replaced in the 14th and 15th centuries. The abbey buildings are now in the care of Historic Scotland.
