Detail of the Monymusk reliquary
Add to album

This portable reliquary, known as the Monymusk Reliquary, is one of Scotland's greatest treasures. It dates from around 750, and was an important object into the Middle Ages. This picture shows one side of the reliquary.

The sides of the reliquary are covered in sheet bronze. The strap-end on this side has been lost, as have some of the rivets that held in place both the tubular fittings on the edges and the bronze sheets.
