Coin (reverse), half-lion, of James II
Add to album

This is the reverse of a gold half-lion of James II minted at Edinburgh between 1451 and 1475. The coin was originally worth three shillings and four pence Scots, later raised to five shillings Scots.

The reverse has a figure of St Andrew flanked by crowns. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Christ Reigns, Christ Conquers, Christ Commands'.

It is thought that some James II's later gold and silver coins were struck in the reign of James III.
