Add to album

This is the obverse of a silver 20 shilling piece minted in Edinburgh in 1696, during the reign of William II.

The obverse bears a portrait of the king. Beneath is a '20', indicating the coin's value. The Latin inscription translates as: 'William, by the Grace of God '.

After his wife Mary's death in 1694, William became sole ruler of England and Scotland. Coinage continued to be struck for William alone in the same denominations as it had been for William and Mary.
