Add to album

This is the obverse of a gold three pound piece or ryal minted at Edinburgh in 1555, during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary was not yet 13 years old when the coin was struck.

The reverse has a crowned shield. The Latin inscription translates as: 'The just man lives by faith'. This inscription is followed by the date, 1555.

Mary's coinage is divisible into five phases, reflecting her early life, two marriages and two widowhoods. During her reign numerous issues appeared in gold, silver and base metal, many of them comprising denominations never previously struck.
