Coin (reverse), 12 pound piece from reign of William II (III of England)

This is the reverse of a gold 12 pound piece from the reign of William II (III of England). Also known as a 'pistole', it is one of the last Scottish gold coins to be minted.

The reverse depicts the initials, 'W' and 'R' on either side of the royal arms. Above the arms is a crown. The Latin inscription around the edge translates as, 'King of Great Britain, France and Ireland 1701'.

This coin was struck from gold dust brought back from Africa by the Darien Company's ship 'The African Merchant'.
