Coin (reverse), penny, from reign of Mary, Queen of Scots

This is the reverse of a billon penny minted at Edinburgh in 1547 or shortly after, during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. The coin was worth one penny Scots.

The reverse has a foliated cross with cinquefoils in the 1st and 3rd angles, crowns in the 2nd and 4th. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Town of Edinburgh'.

Mary's coinage is divisible into five phases, reflecting her early life, two marriages and two widowhoods. During her reign numerous issues appeared in gold, silver and base metal, many of them comprising denominations never previously struck.
