Coin (Reverse), noble or half-merk, from reign of James VI

This is the reverse of a silver noble minted at Edinburgh in 1573, during the reign of James VI. The coin was worth six shillings and eight pence Scots.

The reverse has a foliated cross with a star in the centre, a crown in the 1st and 3rd quarters and a thistle in the 2nd and 4th. The Latin inscription translates as: 'O Lord, save Thy people' (from Psalm 28) and is followed by the date, 1573.

The coins of James VI's reign are considered to have the most beautiful designs and most varied legends of all Scottish coins. After the Union of the Crowns of 1603, Scottish gold and silver coins closely resembled their English counterparts.
