Add to album

This is the obverse of a gold crown minted at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh between 1542 and 1552, during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. The coin was worth 20 shillings Scots.

The obverse bears a crowned shield with a cinquefoil to each side. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Mary, by the Grace of God, Queen of Scots'.

Because they were struck at the mint Holyrood Palace, these coins were known as 'abbey crowns'.
