Coin (reverse), Denarius, of Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus and Quintus Servilius Caepio

This silver denarius was minted in Rome by Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus and Quintus Servilius Caepio in 100 BC. It was a special issue, authorised by the Senate and minted by the quaestors. This picture shows the reverse of the coin.

The reverse depicts two male figures in togas seated side by side between two corn ears (the one on the right unclear). Underneath is the inscription 'AD. FRV. EMV / EX. S. C', an abbreviation of 'ad frumentum emundum, ex senatus consulto'.

The design shows the two quaestors (financial officials) who were responsible for minting this special issue at the order of the Senate (as denoted by the inscription). The corn stalks refer to the reason behind the issue - for the purchase of corn.
