Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny, of E Campbell, Edinburgh
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of E Campbell of Edinburgh. Dated 1796, this token is a 'mule' - struck from two dies not usually used together.

The reverse depicts two crossed pipes with a snuff jar, labelled 37, below. The jar sits between two thistles. The surrounding text reads 'SAINT ANDREWS STREET EDINBURGH'.

Representations of Highlanders were often used on the signs of shops selling snuff and tobacco.
