Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny (proof), of Anderson Leslie & Company, Edinburgh

This is the reverse of a copper proof halfpenny trade token of Anderson Leslie & Company of Edinburgh. Dated 1797, the token was designed by James Wright Junior and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Wyon.

The reverse depicts a gardener holding a spade in one hand and a shrub in the other. This appropriate design is ideal for the issuers who were seedsmen, nurserymen and florists.

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued. Tokens varied in quality from crude lead discs stamped with initials to elaborate pieces of craftwork from the die-sinkers with depictions of industrial or commercial scenes.
