Add to albumThis is the reverse of a copper proof halfpenny trade token of John Pilmer of Dundee in Angus. Dated 1797, the token was designed by James Wright Junior and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Wyon.
The reverse depicts a view of glassworks with the surrounding text, 'GLASS WORKS WEST CONE/FOUNDED 1788'.
John Pilmer, a grocer, issued ten hundredweight of tokens. Circulated locally, trade tokens could be used to buy goods or redeemed for regal coinage. They were also an ideal way for a company to advertise its wares.
