Silver centrepiece decorated with scenes from The Lady of the Lake
Add to album

This shows one side of a silver centrepiece made in 1880-1 by Mackay and Cunningham of Edinburgh. The centrepiece is decorated with scenes from Sir Walter Scott's epic poem, 'The Lady of the Lake'.

The centrepiece consists of three parts - a footed circular base, a two-handled vase and a detachable lid. All are heavily modelled and chased with figures and scenes from the poem.

Customers who patronised fashionable silversmiths in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee or Aberdeen found a great range of goods. From the purely decorative to the expensively practical, silver design was inspired by many different sources.
