Badge (back), used as pass for railway director
Add to album

This is the back of a railway director's gold badge, used as a pass on the Dundee, Perth and Aberdeen Railway. The badge dates from around 1850.

The back illustrates an early steam locomotive. The Latin motto above, 'Celeriter et Certe' translates as 'swift and sure'.

From the late 1860s until 1923, Scotland's railways were run by five companies - Caledonian, Glasgow & South Western, North British, Highland and Great North of Scotland.
