Medal (reverse), of Kelso Skating Club, Scottish Borders

This is the reverse of a silver medal of Kelso Skating Club in the Scottish Borders.

The reverse is inscribed with the initials, 'AS' and the date, '1st Oct 1817'. The Latin inscription 'CELERITER ET FORTITER' translates as 'swiftly and boldly'.

In the Middle Ages skates were made with bone runners, but the introduction of metal runners from Holland made it a more attractive sport.
