Grave slab (cast)
Add to album

This is the back of a fibreglass cast of a stone grave slab from Finlaggan on Islay in Argyll. The slab dates from the 14th or 15th century.

The slab has a hollow which is considered by some to be the foot-print used in the inauguration ceremonies of new Lords of the Isles. It appears to be a natural flaw.

Carved stone graveslabs illustrate the Celtic or Gaelic tradition in Scotland. They are found throughout the West Highlands, commissioned as memorials to important or influential people.
