Letter (front), To Lady Ross, Foulis Castle, by Dingwall, Ross-shire

This is the front of a letter written by Anne Ross of Edinburgh to Lady Ross of Foulis Castle by Dingwall in Ross-shire. Dated 4 May 1764, the subject matter of the letter is fabric samples.

Only the right hand side of the paper is used so that the letter can be folded up and the name and address put on the blank left hand side.

After the development of the horse post in the early 18th century the delivery of letters was speeded up. By 1786 the first mail coach from London to Edinburgh was in service and by 1798 this service had been extended to Aberdeen.
