Glasgow Cup gold medal (obverse)

This is the obverse of a Glasgow Cup gold medal given to Sam English of Rangers Football Club in 1932.

The obverse shows the arms of Glasgow surrounded by the text, 'Glasgow Cup 1931-2/Rangers FC'. The edge of the medal is inscribed, 'Won by S English'.

The growth of Scottish football was astonishing. The first international match took place in 1872 and the Scottish Cup was set up in 1873. By 1890 the sport was dominated by Glasgow's `Old Firm', Celtic and Rangers.
