Medal (Obverse), commemorating the death of David Livingstone

This is the obverse of a bronze medal commemorating the death of David Livingstone in 1873.

The obverse depicts a bust of Livingstone with the surrounding inscription, 'David Livingstone born Blantyre 1813. Died Ilala 1873'.

Livingstone became a hero through travelling and writing about Africa. His book, 'Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa (1857) was greatly praised. His legacy seems to be what he represented to British people - a pioneer with a just mission.
