Trade token (reverse), Of India & China Tea Mart, Gallowgate, Glasgow

This is the reverse of a brass ten penny trade token of the India and China Tea Mart in the Gallowgate in Glasgow.

The reverse has a 12 pointed star surrounded by the lettering 'The India and China Tea Mart/508 Gallowgate'.

In the second half of the 18th century trades and companies began issuing trade tokens to alleviate the shortage of short change. The tokens circulated locally and could be used to buy goods or could be redeemed by their issuers for regal coinage.
