Trade token (reverse), Farthing, of Andrew Melrose, Edinburgh
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper farthing trade token of Andrew Melrose, an Edinburgh tea and spirits dealer. It dates from between around 1780 and 1830.

The reverse depicts a tea canister and a sugar loaf - a cone-shaped mass of crystallized sugar which was broken down for usage. The surrounding text reads, 'GENUINE TEAS/DIRECT FROM THE INDIA HOUSE'.

It has been estimated that between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade tokens were issued. Although some pennies were produced, the tokens were issued mainly in farthing or halfpenny denominations.
