Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper penny trade token of the Phoenix Iron Works in Glasgow. The token is dated 1813.

The reverse depicts the figure of Justice holding a sword and scales, standing between a case and a cask. The surrounding text reads 'ONE PENNY TOKEN/1813'.

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued. Tokens varied in quality from crude lead discs stamped with initials to elaborate pieces of craftwork from the die-sinkers with depictions of industrial or commercial scenes.
