Medal (back), of Edinburgh Amphitheatre

This is the back of a silver medal of the Edinburgh Amphitheatre. Dated 1790 the medal, which may also have been a badge or an entry pass, belonged to James Dewer of Vogrie.

The back is inscribed, 'James Dewar Esq. of Vogrie'.

18th-century Scotland enjoyed a vigorous music culture. Strict religious attitudes which had characterised the 17th century softened, and musical performances and formal dancing as well as drama and the stage became popular.
