Punchbowl

This earthenware punchbowl was made around 1820, probably by Rathbones of Portobello in Midlothian.

The bowl has plain curved sides and a wide deep foot rim. It has a blue transfer-printed decoration and on the bottom a rural scene depicting a rustic cottage, a ruin on a hill, two harvesters and two farm workers.

From 1750 onwards large scale potteries began to appear along the Firth of Forth coastline. Individual factories' fortunes fluctuated over the years but the area remained a significant centre until the 1930s. The last pottery in Portobello moved out only in the early 1970s.
