Add to album

These items belonged to Isobel Cadell, a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse who served at the 2nd Scottish General Hospital in France during the First World War.

The items are a Voluntary Aid Detachment peaked cap and badge; a case containing a hypodermic syringe and needles; a studio photograph from 1917 showing Nurse Cadell in Voluntary Aid Detachment uniform; and a chain with a French coin attached. The coin was engraved in 1916 with Nurse Cadell's name, unit and religion. As these nurses were not military personnel, this was an unofficial identity tag, to be used for identification purposes in case of wounding or death. The chain to which is attached may originally have been used for the carrying of a muff.

As well as providing essential medical support, the employment of women to provide care in military hospitals was a source of emotional comfort to wounded soldiers.
