Decorations, awarded to Sergeant-Major William Robertson, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders

These decorations were awarded to Sergeant-Major William Robertson of the 1st Battalion of The Gordon Highlanders. They date from the South African War of 1899-1902 to the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937.

The medals include the Victoria Cross (second from left), awarded to Robertson for his gallantry at the battle of Elandslaagte in 1899, during the South African War. He led a successful charge under heavy fire, calling out 'Remember Majuba' to encourage the men.

In 1881, the 92nd (Gordon Highlanders) had suffered a bitter defeat at the hands of the Boers at the battle of Majuba Hill. 18 years later Robertson and his comrades were determined to wipe out the stain of defeat.
