Add to album

Earthenware jugs like this were produced in quantity around 1808-9 to celebrate the capture of the French general Antoine-Francois Brennier by Corporal John McKay, 71st (Highland) Regiment at the battle of Vimiera in Spain in 1808. McKay was commissioned an officer for this exploit.

Brennier is shown handing over his purse and watch to McKay in the underglaze transfer-printing which decorates this jug. Jugs of this shape and size would serve a variety of domestic uses, such as the service of milk or beer.
