This maiolica dish was made in Castelli in Italy in the first half of the 18th century.

The dish has a raised stand and is painted in polychrome with 'The Madonna of Loreto'. The Virgin Mary is seated on clouds holding a cross and leaning on a domed building, the Santa Casa. She takes fruit from a salver offered by a female figure (representing Fortitude) dressed in classical armour. Below is St Mary Magdalene.

A shrine was built at Loreto commemorating the miraculous arrival of a house, reputed to be the house of the Virgin, at Loreto at the time of the Annunciation. Loreto became a place of pilgrimage, affording protection against the plague from the 14th century onwards. The potters of Castelli made commemorative ware for Loreto.
