This maiolica bowl was made in Italy, possibly at the Castel Durante workshop of Andrea da Negroponte. It dates from between around 1550 and 1565.

The panel is painted in polychrome with the 'The Heroism of Mucius Scaevola'. Mucius is shown thrusting his hand into a fire resting on a broken column.

Caius Mucius, a young Roman nobleman, succeeded in entering the Etruscan camp besieging Rome, hoping to assassinate Lars Porsena, King of Clusium. After failure and capture, in an act of sacrificial bravery he plunged his right hand into a burning alter flame. Impressed, Porsena freed Mucius who adopted the name Scaevola or left handed (Livy, Ad Urbe Condita II, 12).
