Dish

This maiolica dish was made in Pesaro in Italy between 1550 and 1560.

The bowl is painted in polychrome with 'Joseph and his Brethren'. Joseph is being handed over by his brothers to five Ishmaelites whose leader wears a distinctive straw hat. To the left are two camels resembling horses, and to the right stand six of Joseph's brothers beneath a tree.

Joseph's jealous brothers planned to murder him when he was sent to Dothan by their father, Israel, to mind sheep. One brother, Reuben, suggested that they hide Joseph in the pit. Another, Judah, suggested they sell him for twenty pieces of silver to some passing Ishmaelites. Upon arrival in Egypt, the Ishmaelites sold Jospeh to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard (Genesis 37: 17-28).
