Add to album

This painted and glazed earthenware figure of General Sir Colin Campbell mounted on a horse was made in Staffordshire in England around 1860. Campbell commanded the Highland Brigade in the Crimean War, was ennobled - as Lord Clyde - and subsequently became a Field Marshal.

Earthenware figure of General Sir Colin Campbell mounted on a horse, painted in enamel colours and gilt: English, Staffordshire, c. 1860

This inexpensive ornament was one of series of portrait figures produced by Staffordshire potteries in the second half of the 19th century. They were designed to appeal to the large number of people who took an enthusiastic interest and pride in the British empire and its military heroes. The series also included portraits of royalty and sportsmen.
