Charmstone
Add to album

This irregular and waterworn basalt pebble from Polwarth in Berwickshire is thought to have been used as a charm in the 18th or 19th century.

The pebble was a protective or healing device and would have been rubbed on infected parts of the body. Charmstones such as this would have either been kept by an individual or would have been part of the possessions of a healer.
