This smooth perforated pebble is from Ladykirk in Berwickshire. It is thought to have been used as a charm in the 19th century. It was probably strung on a string in a building or on a doorpost and used as a healing stone to ward off evil spirits.
The hole in the pebble looks as if it has been created artificially.
Perforated stones were regarding as special and as giving some power of divination.
