Charmstones
Add to album

These pieces of stone were used as charms at Atholl in Perthshire, probably in the 18th or 19th century.

Small perforated stone, probably used as a charmstone, from Fife

Charms were widely used to ward off illness. Their special nature came from unusual materials or in the case of written charms, quasi-religious wording. Often they were worn, but some were dipped in water which was then drunk.
