of harbour at Kallin, North Uist
This photograph shows wooden fishing boats in the harbour at Kallin in Isle of Grimsay in North Uist.
After a decline in the building of wooden boats in Scotland following the popularity of steel and glass-reinforced plastic vessels, there is now a resurgence of interest in traditional wooden boat-building. These new wooden boats are mainly for leisure pursuits rather than as working vessels.
Scotland once had a long-established apprenticeship system which had ensured the continuity of highly-skilled shipwrights and boat-builders. Today there are only a handful of these boatyards left which employ craft apprentices on a regular basis.
